Keep local health care

Image
The budget reconciliation act this summer makes severe cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Our Congresswoman Claudia Tenney voted enthusiastically to cut this support for her constituents.  The cuts threaten everyone's access to local health care.  The cuts don't just affect the people receiving support from these programs (about 40% of Seneca County residents are on these). The local hospitals and medical providers depend on the revenue from these source to keep going. It appears that Rep. Tenney seeks a world where people who struggle to pay for medical insurance and people whose health limits how much they and work, will not be able to get medical care because they can't afford it. And the rest of the people.  Cities like Geneva and Canandaigua depend on the health system for a lot of jobs. If the health systems pull back because there is not enough income, even well-insured people will have to travel to Rochester or Syracuse.   That is a depressing and ent...

Labor Day Action in Geneva

Image
Labor Day is a holiday celebration of American worker effort,  ingenuity and productivity.  Today the Trump Administration  has weakened and decimated many Federal agency programs that protect and advance the rights and benefits of the average worker to fund substantial tax breaks for the very wealthy. Mark Labor Day by letting the community know that you don't accept this illegality Monday September 1, 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at G eneva Lakefront Park, along Rts. 5&20 Organized by Indivisible Seneca and the Geneva Democratic Committee   The theme is Workers over Billionaires . Billionaires are stealing from working families, destroying our democracy, and building private armies to attack our towns and cities. S topping the billionaire takeover takes action at the ballot box, the courts, and through a bigger and stronger worker movement.   Nearby events are in Canandaigua at 10 am, Watkins Glen at noon, Seneca Falls at 1:00 pm and Auburn at  5 pm.

Prosperity...for us!

Image
Specifically, we want to see policies that bring prosperity to the residents of Seneca County, not policies that create prosperity for the already-prosperous at the expense of the residents of Seneca County.   Rep. Claudia Tenney consistently votes in favor of the extremely wealthy and not for us. The billionaires' club called Americans for Prosperity is very happy with her. We are not.

The rule of law

Image
The rule of law is fundamental to our society. We expect our government to follow the law scrupulously. The present administration in Washington has no respect for that requirement and is continually breaking the law and forcing others to do so. Rep. Tenney claims to respect this rule, but encourages actions that have agents of the Federal government violating the legal protections of Americans.    The “Rule of Law” has b ecome an expression used by many but understood by few.  It is an ancient concept and was embodied in the Constitution in 1789 and the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Effectively, the Constitution and the amendments (often referred to as the “Bill of Rights”) grant the rights of free speech, assembly, and religion, due process of law, habeas corpus, prohibition of excessive (“cruel and unusual”) punishments, among other things, to all persons regardless of status, that is, citizens and non-citizens alike. Such rights cannot be denied by the gov...

Where is her allegiance?

Image
We have all declared our allegiance to the republic whenever we say the pledge of allegiance. Unfortunately, Rep. Tenney's allegiance lies elsewhere. Her actions don't serve her country or her constituents, but reveal her first allegiance to the president's personal goals.  Members of Indivisible Seneca have a patriotic dedication to this country and feel that it is at risk. We deserve a representative who will act in the interest of the people of the 24 district and of the country. The founding documents of our nation – the Constitution and the Bill of Rights – are what make us a democratic republic, rather than a pure representative democracy.  In a representative democracy – a government without a Constitution - lawmakers are free to establish whatever laws they are able to pass.  Our Constitution and Bill of Rights, however, created inalienable rights for all individuals within the nation that no law can take away.   This is the meaning of a Republic – representa...
